How to sew a Ribbon Skirt

  • Leiren Designs 8309 15th Avenue Northwest Seattle, WA, 98117 United States (map)

Metís fashion designer Madison Leiren will be showing you the process of how to make a ribbon skirt based on measurements, as well as some design variations for inspiration.

Ribbon skirts are a centuries-old Indigenous tradition historically reserved for ceremonies, and they can mean different things to different people and communities.

Considered sacred, ribbon skirts are a symbol of identity, resilience and survival often connecting the wearer to culture and kinship.

Learn how to take measurements and cut the fabric for the skirt, sew in an elastic waistband and attach ribbon to the fabric.

Class fee is $50. Basic sewing knowledge recommended. If you would like to make your own ribbon skirt at this event, or get help with questions you have with a ribbon skirt you are working on, please feel free to bring your sewing machine and supplies. We will email you a list of supplies to purchase if you would like to make your own skirt. Class size is limited to prioritize one-on-one attention to each attendee.
